I think one of the most interesting aspects of this poem is the comparison Ferlinghetti makes between San Francisco light and the "pearly light of Paris". Why would Ferlinghetti choose Paris of all cities to compare with San Francisco? Paris is known as the City of Lights and it has a certain reputation of grandeur, well-defined culture, and classic beauty. The light of Paris is "pearly" and refined. In comparison, San Francisco has its own unique kind of "grandeur" and beauty. It is an eclectic mash up of a city, made up of hundreds of different cultures and experiences. Although it may not be as pearly or refined as Paris, Ferlinghetti clearly loves no other light as much as San Francisco.
